Welcome to the BioRECAST project webpage. The project officially started in November 2023, and over its 42-month lifespan, it brings together organizations from four EU countries (Italy, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Germany) to work collaboratively with the aim of decarbonizing the steel sector.
The BIORECAST project aims to address the challenge of decarbonizing the steel sector by exploring the use of residual organic waste, such as sewage sludge, industrial sludge, domestic organic waste, food waste, and agricultural waste, through slow pyrolysis. By producing biocoal and pyrolysis gases and upgrading the biocoal's chemical composition, the project seeks to provide an alternative to fossil coal in the steel-making process. The goal is to validate the application of these sustainable sources, particularly in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) plants, to foster the decarbonization of the steel sector and enhance its economic viability.
